Lights

With one exception, navigation lights are activated from panels in the galley.

  • a stern light mounted on the stern pulpit;
  • a deck light located on the main mast; but
  • port and starboard lights mounted on the bow pulpit are activated by switches on the forward cabin bulkhead.

During a severe winter storm in late 2022, a neighbouring boat’s jib cover with a metal loop at its base destroyed the top mast tri-coloured light on Moby Boat. The replacement light, with the addition of wires to discourage gulls from perching on the mast and fouling the deck and sail covers below, is ready for installation.

Instruments

Positioned in the instrument panel in the cockpit are:

  • Lowrance Elite-7m chart plotter
  • Autohelm 2243 system ST30 electronic compass; the transducer is installed on the stern pulpit
  • Marine 480 depth sounder; the transducer is forward on the port side

Other instruments are positioned on hinges inside the entrance from the cockpit.

  • Uniden Solara DSC VHF radio; the antenna is mounted at the top of the mizzen mast
  • Garmin GPS 126/128 Marine Navigator
  • Furono Model 1623 marine radar; the antenna is mounted on the mizzen mast
Navigation Instruments

Because these instruments are mounted on hinges, they can be stowed inside the boat but rotated to appear in the cockpit hatch opening during travel. Alternatively, a crew member inside the boat can then monitor progress during travel in inclement weather.

Navigation Instruments

An ICOM IC-M1V handheld VHF radio is mounted on the aft bulkhead in the galley in a charging bracket.

User installation manuals and operating instructions are included.

There are additional options to supplement navigation requirements. From the top proceeding clockwise, they are:

  • charts, with an extensive collection for the area around and north of Vancouver Island;
  • implements for plotting courses;
  • a handheld Garmin GPS II Plus;
  • a handheld compass.
Manual Navigation Aids

A series of Transport Canada official publications and cruising guides are on the bookshelves.
