SAFETY

Lifelines

  • Two levels of strong braided rope are threaded through wood stanchions from the bow pulpit to the stern pulpit of the boat.
  • The stanchions are 30 inches high, much higher than on most production boats.
  • The stanchions are positioned in strong galvanized steel bases bolted to the deck.
  • Neither these ash stanchions nor the original oak ones they replaced have ever broken.

Handrails

  • There are oak handrails on the cabin top.

Bilge Pumps

  • The electric-powered Whale Gulper IC Complete Bilge Pump System 12V S18284 is activated by switches on the control panel under the cockpit.
  • In addition, there is a manual Whale Gusher Titan Bilge Pump available as a backup in emergencies.

Abandon Ship Bag

  • A heavy duty bag contains supplies for emergency exit from the boat.
  • This includes flares for signaling distress.

Other

There are several other items that have proved useful over the years:

  • an air horn cartridge
  • two horns for manual blowing, such as when small motor boats are heard nearby in heavy fog
  • a ship’s bell that can be mounted when needed on the post between the galley and main cabin
  • diving suit and weights that are useful for checking the boat under water (such as when submerged polypropylene rope to a fish trap snagged the engine shaft!)
  • extra ropes.
